Pulse voters want Florida, Michigan do overs

March 11th, 2008, 1:26 pm by Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief

ocpoltical-pulse-logo5.gifDo it again. OC Political Pulse respondents want new Democratic primaries in Florida and Michigan — and they want either the Democratic National Committee or the states to pay for it.

The Democrats are in this fix because both states held primaries before the Feb. 5 deadline set by the Democratic National Committee.

Of the 168 people who voted in the unscientific Pulse poll, 52 want the DNC to pay and 44 say it should be the states. And not surprisingly, 52.8 percent of Republicans would rather see the DNC spend some of its money for the do overs. That means less money Democrats have to spend to challenge the GOP presumptive nominee John McCain. Among independents, 42.1 percent want the DNC to pay while 31.6 percent want the states to pony up the estimated $30 million it would cost for two new primaries.

Baugh: This resets the table for the GOP race

January 15th, 2008, 8:45 pm by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

“That’s a solid win and resets the table for the entire Republican race,” said OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh, a Mitt Romney man. I’ve written elsewhere that Baugh would do in Michigan what he’d done in Iowa and New Hampshire — travel to the state and phone voters on behalf of Romney. However, the death of a longtime family friend meant Baugh ended up staying in California this time. But the Romney win seemed to lift his spirits.

“The bounces out of Iowa and New Hampshire weren’t as determinative as they once seemed,” he said. “You need a candidate that as sustainability and Romney has that.”

McCain supporters downplay Romney win

January 15th, 2008, 8:36 pm by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

van-tran.jpgJohn McCain came in a respectable second despite the fact he was outspent 3-1 by the native son, Mitt Romney,” said Assemblyman Van Tran, R-Garden Grove, a McCain supporter.

“The next test for Mitt Romney will be in the Bible belt. Definitely John McCain is in a good position going into the weekend.”

Giuliani supporters getting nervous

January 15th, 2008, 7:33 pm by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

In the Lincoln Club, you’ll find backers of virtually every GOP candidate — Buck Johns has donated money to four of the hopefuls himself. Huntington Beach investment advisor Chip Hanlon is among the club’s supporters of Rudy Giuliani and like many others in that camp, Giuliani’s strategy of not competing in the early races makes him a bit nervous.

“A Rudy supporter at this point has to hope the race remains fluid and he can make a big rush in the end,” Hanlon said via cell phone from Disneyland this evening, where he’s celebrating his son’s fifth birthday. “It’s worrisome.”

Dick Ackerman: Tight race is good for the GOP

January 15th, 2008, 7:27 pm by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

State Senate GOP Leader Dick Ackerman, R-Irvine, is among legions of Mitt Romney supporters pleased to see him finally win something besides Wyoming.

“If he hadn’t won, he would have had to work harder,” Ackerman said. “It was important, but it wasn’t make-or-break.”
